    There is a foam store on Houston a block or two east of Bowery. As mentioned, there are several plastics and rubber stores on Canal which might also have foam.

    Look for a fabric store like JoAnn Fabrics. That's where I got the padding for my backpack. They're a chain store and I would assume that there is one in the NYC area, as I run into them EVERYWHERE else I go. :-)

    Here in western MA, they usually list such stores in the yellow pages under something like "Fabric - Retail".

    Another option would be flat sheets of the "Armaflex" pipe insulation. You should be able to find this at plumbing/HVAC supply houses, or from an insulating company.
