Simply going from NYC to a hub in the EU, what's the best value with a real airline (not sitting on a charter or something sketchy)?
And when is the lowest point - bottom of the "off-season" that doesn't fall on a EU school vacation?

Iceland Air used to be the cheapest I'd ever found, but I don't know what it's like now. The flights would go through Reyjavik (sp?) and on to Amsterdam or Copenhaven. I'm sure British Airways will be having a sale on airfare...they must be desperate for flyers by now.

i got a RT NS flight from NYC to germany for $400. later io got a RT NS to paris for $500. germany is by far the cheapest place to fly into.
10/6-10/27 on delta.com was $500
same dates on kayak yielded $560 on continetal. both RT NS
i get the best deals from delta. YMMV
OH! check baggage restictions as well. maybe contiinetal has "free" bags. i know air france did. maybe check out the foreign carriers as they may not be as scummy as domestic. i wish they would just give the fares with bags included in the price already.

Tour flights are very cheap but you are limited to specific dates of flights.

Last February Lufthansa was advertizing low fares on the radio in Houston. We spent 10 days in Belgium in February once. Tourists were scarce. I think all the locals had gone to Florida. Froze our tails off. No wonder air fares were cheap.

Almost any airline during the Winter months. Bring your own heating system.
If you're flying on to your real destination remember to include all the costs for the second leg. Airline, taxes and any transfers. You might be landing in the big London airport and then flying out of Stanstead. Which I doubt you'll walk.
Assuming you're carrying a camera check the carry on limits.
Right now, with travel being in the state it's in, it's all cheap. In May of this year I got R/T from BWI to Barcelona for $500-ish on Delta, with a stop through Kennedy. The airlines are all but giving away flights now, so just pick a date and go. But Kayak is a good place to check, and FareCompare.com is another good option.
You might look at air India or other long haul flights to the East. that go through Frankfurt or Amsterdam, and just book the short bit.
