You can go down Freeport Blvd down the Sacramento River to the towns of Locke and Walnut Grove. These are old towns built by the Chinese and Japanese in the late 1800s. They have been cleaned up considerably since Roger Minick did his book Delta West in the late 1960s and I did my book, Delta Country in the early 1980s but probably still worthwhile. You can go up to the Jackson area in the foothills, You can contact the View Point Gallery and see if they are open, there is a pretty good camera store called Camerarts.

You might consider checking out the American River toward South Tahoe along Hwy 50. There are numerous places to shoot just off the road, and it is a beautiful area, not too far from Sacramento. You could easily spend an entire day shooting along the river if the weather is overcast.
I agree with Steve. Freeport Blvd. from South Sacramento along the levee is wonderful and Locke is a very nice stop. They are also photographer friendly and will not give you any trouble if you wander about. The residents are easy to talk too as well. I usually take my Delta Workshop there on one of the stops.
