Kristoff, yes, I suppose so.
Any other engravings on the barrel?

A quick review of where we are. I said in the first post of this thread:
We now have two sets of matches -'It would be impossible to prove that the serial numbers of early TTH lenses were a single sequence but it is possible to prove that they weren't, simply by finding duplicate serial numbers across the various types of early TTH lenses.'
- the first (found by Masayoshi) 11368, a MAR (Mid Angle Rectilinear) on Worthpoint, and 11368, a Cooke Series V on Worthpoint (also appears on the Karl French Cooke Portrait lens spreadsheet). The waterhouse slot on the MAR cuts through the 'Eq Focus' engraving, which doesn't look quite right (I doubt it's what TTH would have wanted)... It may be perfectly correct of course.
- the second, 11085, an RVP (Rapid View Portrait, from my own RV/RVP/CAP spreadsheet), and 11085, a Cooke Series III on Worthpoint.
Onwards and upwards!![]()
Just going back to the subject of TTH catalogue dates (which was around post 36 in this thread) I just found this in the RPS Journals, Vol 35, 26th May 1894:
'Retail Price List of Photographic Lenses manufactured by Taylor, Taylor and Hobson, Leicester. Messrs Taylor, Taylor and Hobson's lenses are now well known, and their latest price list just issued is the eleventh edition.'
Good evening, Peter.
That sounds chronologically reasonable.
From Ivan comment,
the early Taylor Leicester RR sample is on ebay.

Interesting. A rough chronology:
Founded by Thomas Smithies Taylor in 1886, joined by his brother William Taylor.
They are joined in 1887 by Herbert William Hobson.
The early lenses are variously engraved 'Taylor' (although singular could be both brothers) or 'TS & W Taylor' but with no clear chronology. This seems to point to lens barrels being produced, engraved with the manufacturer, 'put into stock' and used at a later date.
Once Hobson joins the company the members are enumerated individually as Taylor, Taylor & Hobson.
So that early lens could be 1886 or 1887, but before Herbert William Hobson joined. Or at least engraved before Hobson joined. There could be a time lag here...
Interestingly, Herbert William Hobson left the company in September 1896, to be replaced by a relation, William Stephen Hobson. This has caused some folks to be confused about the Hobson names on patents.
Sounds like that lens has a 2 inch thread. Would be good to know if it threads in to a 24 TPI flange.
