Unless the OP opts for a solution by using a different camera. Many (most?) large format (and smaller format too) users have "dumped" their first camera for something that better meets their needs. There's nothing unusual about that at all. It's about as common as having focusing locks on 4x5 cameras.

..if you could point to ANY 5x4” philips-type cameras made by ANY manufacturer which has a lock on the focus track. I had a look, couldn’t find one. I assume you must know otherwise?

While I can't claim that all of these 4x5 cameras have focusing lock, all of the ones I've personally seen have it -- and I assume that most do.

There is a table at the bottom of the page that lists camera's features. "HAS FOCUSING LOCK?" is not listed as a feature -- neither is "HAS TRIPOD SOCKET?"

So you've seen focus locks on several philips-type design 5x4" cameras (of which there have only been a limited number of manufacturers and models in production ever), so come on then spill the beans, which ones?

None of your "four TOKO 4x5" folding, wooden, field cameras" are of the philips-type design BTW.

This is beginning to feel like someone having a pop at motorbikes for not having a third wheel on the basis that "all the bikes I've seen had it", when in fact all you've ever seen are trikes.

I didn't bring in the term "philips-type design 5x4". Neither did the OP. I'm simply responding to the OP's "problem". I used the clarifying term "folding, wooden, field cameras". The only Phillips 4x5 I've ever seen looks like a folding, wooden, field camera to me. But that's really irrelevant. Any decent 4x5 should have locking focus -- at least in my book. I would never buy one that lacked that basic feature. If you and the OP are happy without it -- I doubt the OP is -- I wish you the best of luck.

If you want sturdy, buy sturdy, if you need lightweight, buy lightweight. You will have to give up something to get the perfect camera for your needs and will need to perfect your technique to make it work for you.

I don't have the H1 series, I am using the 45F2 which doesn't come with a lock for the rail.

I bought my camera last June after upgrading from Intrepid. I am not in the position of changing my camera. I also didn't know that the the rail lock would be a feature I need so I didn't look into buying the H series from Chamonix. Maybe in a couple of years I will move to a different camera and make sure that it has a rail locking feature.

Excuse me? I haven't opposed any suggestion. I have been told to tighten some screws but no to over do it and someone else suggested using gaffers tape which is what I am going to do. I haven't opposed anyone in any way.

No need to apologize for anything. I'm the one who is being seen as "out of line" -- for pointing out the obvious. I'm as surprised as you are that your camera lacks focusing lock.

Since the FORUM is an open discussion for the benefit of everyone, I'm sure that you and I are not the only ones who have learned something.
