    Calculating depth of field

Hello, I am pretty much brand new to LF photography though am experienced in the techniques otherwise. I've purchased a Rodenstock Sironar N 150mm lens. Does anyone know if there are depth-of-field tables available for this lens anywhere? My web search has not turned up any results. Thank you.

    That's because there are none.

You might get some notion of what you seek by this app. Set focal length to 150 and CoC to 0.1 mm

Sinar P cameras included a depth of field scale on their rear standards. Possibly other Sinar models also. I found it very easy to use back in the 1980s. Years ago I adapted a similar type scale to my Nikon Multiphot.

    In this FORUM go to
    https://www.largeformatphotography.info/dofknob/

Once adapted a depth of field scale to use with my flatbed camera. It actually did work but proved to be just too much trouble to use in the field.

Just pick up the shirt pocket Rodenstock DOF/Scheimpflug calculator. It will compute DOF and Scheimpflug for all formats from 35 mm to 810 plus give you exposure corrections.

Or make your own DOF dial(s) for the len(es) you want, the size you want with the exact details you want -- for FREE:

Set 150mm and 4x5 film and select meters or feet/inches.

    Re: Calculating depth of field

I'll chime in here and recommend the method detailed in the LF homepage article, "How to select the f-stop" here: https://www.largeformatphotography.info/fstop.html .

In essence, you find the near and far points you would like to be in sharp focus in the final print and then simply position your focus halfway between the two (physically, on the camera bed or rail) and then choose the optimum f-stop from a chart (I have a sticker on all my cameras).

It's a bit of a read, but well worth it.

Plus, this method takes diffraction into account as well and gives you the best compromise between depth of field and diffraction degradation at small f-stops.

    Best,

    Doremus

The rest of his website is an acquired taste, take it or leave it, bit this DOF scale is 100% bulletproof. Follow this and you can and will not go wrong:
