Here's a kallitype of my mother-in-law, Rosa, at 95, using an 11 1/2" Verito which doesn't cover 8x10 at infinity but does so in portraits and close-ups.

Shot at F3.5, set lens at SHARP, focused on the pavilion in the vase center.

Shot at F3.5, set SOFT FOCUS at 3, refocused on the pavilion in the vase center after setting variable soft focus.

It appears that the soft setting gave a little more depth of field forward of the main focus, seen in the figurine to the right. That's what Dallmeyer originally came up with the "soft focus" lens for.

    Re: Soft-Focus Lens Examples

In my opinion, soft focuses show themselves in the harshest lighting possible. Halos and glow need high contrast. Here the effect is slightly present only on the figure on the right.
    Thanks for your test.
