Great find.

A much greater find would be the original Portraits of Greatness, reproduced in the Netherlands on sheet fed gravure on appropriate paper. Each 9.5x12 inch full page image can be removed without damage and framed if desired. Trying to appreciate Karsh on a computer screen is too much like listening to Beethoven symphonies on a clock radio.
Looks like an old Eastman all metal Commercial camera
Take a closer look, its an Agfa /Ansco without front swings. Even if you couldn't see much else of the camera the knobs are a dead giveaway.
Karsh had a long career and that photo is labeled 1952- long before Calumet introduced the C-1.
What's important to remember, though, is that the great portraitist wore shirts with French cuffs and a double-breasted suit.
Churchill was smoking a cigar and Karsh had the audacity to yank it out of his mouth. That's what elicited the stern frown in that shot. He also took a second shot of Churchill, but smiling with amusement once he recognized the photographer's clever ruse.
I've seen original 16X20 prints of that famous shot. They're very crisp. I'm pretty sure no center column was used. Otherwise, all we'd see it the top of a bald head.
