I compared 1 sample all the way up to 16 samples. (Mac OSX, VueScan, Epson V700): No difference at all in scanning speed (or noise for that matter). VueScan has a number of "features" available for the Epson V700 that don't really do anything. For instance, RGB Exposure < 1...no real function, Focus Settings: Non functional as the V700/800/etc doesn't support. And, I suspect, Number of samles setting.
Here's a comparison I did with a 4x5 Tmax100 between the V850 and Howtek 8000. After sharpening I think they compare favorably zoomed in, but I haven't done prints.
