I am very proud to announce that my new book, Eleventyone Portraits 1841 to 1950, printed by Friesen's of Altona, Manitoba is now available. The book is 9x9 inches in size, hard covered and 268 pages in total, with 114 full colour plates.
This book arose out of a wish to make available the collection of portraits that I have gathered during my working life. With an interest in photography, portraiture, history and a need to cover my walls with something of interest, I collected a series of photographic portraits representing the technical history of photography from 1841 to 1950.
While many plates are by anonymous photographers and with anonymous subjects, there are many previously unpublished portraits by well known photographers including Pierre Petit, Rogi Andre, Notman, Rose Marie Clausen, Max Thorek, Marcus Adams, August Sander, Gertrude Käsebier, Clarence White, Paul Anderson, Alice Boughton, Doris Ullman, Arnold Genthe, Erich Salomon, Clara Sipprell, Lotte Jacobi, and Daguerreotypist Richard Beard.
Each plate is accompanied by a page of text discussing the photographic technique, the sitter, the photographer and particularly the concept of character as it relates to portraiture.
In order to make the plates as available as possible to people interested in this sort of thing the book is sold at cost ($80 Canadian per book) plus shipping.
Many thanks to Robert Tombs, President of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and a noted book and graphic designer who designed the book!
