The white spot on the first image IS in fact where I pressed on the darkslide too much and it touched the plate. Good eye. The second is actually a pool of water that just reflected a ton of UV even in the shade. Here's a phone image of it.
For 8x10 I use a Secret Jardin DP60 grow tent as a darkbox. I cut a square in the back and added a 12x12 red acrylic (#2423) window 1/4" thick. I secured it with 1-inch velcro all the way around and used black tape on both sides to really seal it. It's daylight safe as long as no direct rays of sunlight go through it and hit the plate. I use 4 yards of blackout curtain liner secured with plastic clamps as a shroud. It's tight inside but gets the job done.
For 5x7 and smaller I made a Bastard Box that folds down flat into a 20x26" portfolio tote.
