Thanks Dennis.
- The image was made about 3 weeks ago, around July 21 if my memory is correct.
- Time was 8:03pm, according to the clock tower. Joking aside, it was around 8:00pm.
- Lens was Schneider Super Angulon XL 58/5.6, at f/22.
- Exposure was something around 4-6 seconds.
This image was a challenge in many ways for me. The camera position needed to capture the full height of the clock tower, while preserving a view of the Flatiron Building, was not easy to find. The camera adjustments were in principle not difficult, yet some refinement in postprocessing was still needed. I was striving for a "blue hour" rendering, and did not quite achieve this. The experience was humbling in many ways, and I learned some things.
Thanks, Chassis,
I was not sure if the clock time was accurate.
I know the area well. You did a good job with positioning the camera and lining up the buildings to avoid unwanted mergers of the many different elements.
I particularly like the buildings against the sky and the manner in which they vary in height.
As much as I like the image, the contrasting busy feeling within the bottom 10-20% of the image is somewhat distracting to my eye. While one could argue the lower portion grounds the image, I wonder whether some degree of cropping might be a consideration. Just a thought.
I know just enough to be dangerous !
Dennis, thanks for the comments. I like this area because of the openness of the space, not so common in the city. I see your point and agree that there is some business in the lower part of the image.

Jesse, well seen, and well executed too.
Nicely done, Jesse.

I'm not anywhere as good as you guys at architecture. I'm more of a people picture guy. But I figure I got 9 months left here cause my son will finish up HS and move somewhere a little more affordable. I figure I should take pics of the neighborhood before I leave.
This is Saint Paul's Greek Orthodox church by my house. I originally wanted to take a pic of the cross on the dome, but realized when I walked over to it, you can't see it!
Chamonix 4x5, Xenar 150, old Arista EDU 400 @ 200, I used a sekonic 398M studio (yeah, I'm just used incident metering), 1/200/f16 and I figure, give it a little more for the white walls so 1/200/f11, processed PMK. Been having fun with my betterscanning holder and AN glass.
