I'm not saying that the testing methodology is wrong. I'm just saying that it is unrealistic to think the camera will reach equilibrium in 100% humidity. People in high humidity climates do not live without air conditioning, certainly not in the US or in the industrialized world.

It would be nice to know at what humidity level the helical starts to seize up.

Larry, "if it is worth doing at all it is worth doing badly" sounds good until the thing done badly bites someone.

I don't consider being realistic about environmental conditions when testing a $100 plastic camera to be doing anything badly, but I guess nobody sees my point.

Fine, next up, zero gravity testing. :-) Charter the vomit comet. It's only time and money.

If a Floridian leaves their TravelWide outside for three months in summer, they get what they deserve.

what about anyone in southeast Asia... say Singapore. Humidity there is high all year round.

They have air conditioning in Singapore, try Malaysia. To me, if it takes months of exposure to reach equilibrium at a high humidity, this is a nonissue. It's not a flaw that nylon takes a long time to absorb water, it's an asset. If you can find a different nylon that is slightly better then ok.

It just seems like more and more money gets spent on running samples. Honestly, I appreciate their efforts but if nobody is ponying up more money, at some point, enough is enough.

If that's an issue, I would be packing desiccant gel in with my gear. Humidity would be a killer for the helical and would promote fungal growth on your optics.

So what are you saying? Protect your $100 camera, with a few thousand dollars worth of air conditioning equipment and a house???

Maybe, just maybe, they are trying to build the best possible camera they can because they would actually like to sell a lot of Travelwides. Not just the ones that we are waiting on. And, as the name implies, it is intended to travel, so there is probably a better than even chance that it could end up in environments where heavy humidity is an issue.

From my perspective I find it refreshing to find someone who really wants to provide a high quality product at a very fair price. But, that is probably just me.

I'm saying no such thing, only stating the fact that people everywhere, including in developing countries, are buying air conditioners at a fast rate, as described in this article:

    http://mobile.nytimes.com/2012/06/21...anted=all&_r=0

so that the worries related to the effect of humidity on the camera are overblown.

Put a note to pack dessicant when traveling in high humidity regions. It seems like we're talking about months of exposure to high humidity, aren't we?

There is building a high quality product and then there is losing your shirt trying to build something that conforms to unrealistic expectations. I believe they're already in the hole to the tune of about $30k, I'm just just trying to save some money.

Let's put a hold on who does or does not have AC. That is a distraction that will end up in a pointless argument.

And were I Ben, I'd be sending one or two people their money back with the comment, "nevermind". Good thing for you guys that Ben's not me.
