Wehman 8x10 or Century Universal 8x10 for compact + lightweight
Hello . . . I can squeeze 15" from this camera. The bellows is the original painted cloth/cardboard, which is extremely firm. The camera could take a rail extension, which I don't have. But, the bellows would then need to be replaced with something more flexible. I use several lenses this camera, which all have approximately the same focus length. My primary lens is a R. D. Gray No. 6 Periscope 12" focus, that uses Waterhouse stops and no shutter. Then there is the Gundlach Radar 8x10 1:4.5 in a Betax No. 5 which weighs almost as much as the camera. And I've used the single element from a B&L RR that once belonged to Kodak No. 3a model C folding camera. It works in a number of small shutters kodak/IBSOR. That simple RR element covers the entire 8x10 and gives a wonderful vintage character to the exposures. Pinholes are also used occasionally.
Several years ago I sold the camera. Within a couple of weeks I was killing myself over the huge blunder I made. After about a year I was in touch with it's owner and he was very generous to let me trade for it. We are family once again.
Cool. Have you experimented with 5x8 and 4x10 using splitters? I made a set for my Rochester camera that I can post pics of if you are interested. Just gives you an easy way to have more options for composing with a single camera and limited lens set.
Nope, not yet. You should start a thread on the procedure. I have used regular film, paper negatives, x-ray film, and now my new baby . . . 8x10 hand-coated dry plates. Now that I'll have more time available, I can get after that. I keep finding silly projects that set me back.
I am now the owner of a nice looking (via online photos) Rochester Optical 8x10 Universal camera. Should weigh somewhere between 5 to 7 pounds and I am hoping it will be a great start for a light 8x10 camera.
I really appreciate everyone's input on this issue and am looking forward to the next step in this journey.
I hope everyone is having a terrific New Year. Thank you.
