Pyrocat HD in Glycol - Which Glycol

I'm seeing that Artcraft sells Propylene Glycol for $15.00 per "Pint"!!!!!!

Could I simple use this instead: Amazon Propylene Glycol?

    Or this: Propylene Glycol?

    Are they different?

Or you can buy at http://www.chemistrystore.com/

Should all work for mixing Pyrocat-HD.

How necessary is Glycol to the Pyrocat HD formulation? Isn't it added for long term storage or use?

It's not necessary. Yes, it's used to increase storage time.

Further to the above advice, are there any alternatives besides the already-discussed Propylene Glycol? I'm able to get ample supplies of Ethylene Glycol and, of course, Methyl Hydrate. Would there be any problem using either of these as substitutes for Prop.G.?

I have personally mixed Pyrocat with both propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol and the working solution gave the same results as stock mixed with distilled water. I know someone who mixed it in ethylene glycol and that also seemed to work for him, but I personally can not vouch for the ethylene version.

BTW, if you are going to mix Pyrocat in glycol and like the pyrocatechol/phenidone image characteristics I would recommend Pyrocat-HDC. See http://pyrocat-hd.com/html/mixing.html for mixing instructions. This version, which eliminates potassium bromide and uses ascorbic acid instead of sodium metabisulfite, goes into glycol solution at a lower temperature than the original -HD.

Ethylene glycol is severely toxic. Propylene glycol is not.
