Hello from NY/NJ, and a little about my book project

Thank you for allowing me to join your forum, and I hope to find ways I can to contribute, share and learn. I am 43 and have been privately doing large format photography in a manner that attempts to grow out of the early Aperture and general Weston/Adams/White/Caponigro tradition since 1990. Before that I used a smaller camera and inherited experience and equipment from my father who photographed 4x5 and 8x10 as a dedicated hobbyist, and learned under Fred Picker who I also communicated with. Four homes I have lived in had dedicated darkrooms built by my father or myself, but now I live married in a small condo and my Zone VI 8x10 enlarger 44" column sits under a tarp (very sad), but I do have an Epson 7800 in the bedroom which can make very good prints, if I had a place to store them (I don't.) So, for my latest project I came up with the idea of doing a book that at first goes through one of the short run printers available that use the HP Indigo line of presses. One I found allows (in theory) complete customization of the CMYK PDF file that you give them, thus allowing greater control of the color, tone and densities of the final product. I would love to communicate with anyone interested in this subject. I would also be interested in talking to people in my area who might benefit from my traditional darkroom equipment in a sharing or other capacity.
As for the rest of my background, briefly, in the mid-1990s I showed, defended and developed my work in an academic setting, obtaining an MFA degree from Hunter College in NY with the support of the late Mark Feldstein, who was a great LF shooter earlier in his career and one of the best printers I ever saw. I had some small post-graduate exhibitions, but moved into a photogaphy related career based on working inside a stock photo house in New York while I was still in school, where I stayed for 7 years. I then worked in a digital photography studio setting for several years as a retoucher, premedia and technical color specialist before moving on to perform similar duties for the music artists under contract with a major printing company for 8 years, where I still am today.
My current book project is purposely limited to the subject of spring progressing into summer in the Adirondack mountains, and is composed mostly of new work but flavored with some architecture and details dating back 30 years or so. The subject is also a metaphor, though, for how to see or transform nature and traditional work into "Fine Art" that may or may not be relevant today. Preparing photos digitally as compared to traditionally is an immense subject I could go on for hours about. The hard part is writing about photography and forcing oneself to make sacrifices that will finish a project that can go on too long. Thank you for your time, sorry for such a long opening post, and I hope to share my work with you in the future and if you think I can help you please drop me a line.

Hello Mike, Welcome!!! I don't know how but your post accidently popped up on my droid. I just joined this website last month. I have not really had time to peruse through it at all except to respond to a few replies to my intro posting.
I am a jewelry designer/artist who went to FIT division of SUNY graduated in 94' ironically did a reversal of what you did with regards to upsizing in a place to live. Moved from two bedroom apt. in Ft. Lee to a much larger house in Bergen county. I am a picker like the guys on the tv show... i have picked just as I'm moving into my new home from a neighbor who is moving out an enlarger, and other dark room equipment. ie.. chemicals, trays, timer, dark room lighting... I didnt get a good look at the brand of enlarger but the guy throwing it out said his girlfriend used it in college.

For myself, I had fortunately been blessed with natural ability to look in a way at nature and see art.

Now, through picking up at yard sales, I built an incredible collection of cameras (I believe).. graflex speed camera and all he extras in a news reporter/phototgraphers case... film loaders/flash/filters... next a Linhof technika 70 with a schnieder kreutznach rangefinder and loader, Universal Juwell Ikon Zeiss Same model Ansell Adams used 11/? i forgot that last # 75??? I think it uses 10x8 film.. amongst other camera that intrigued me....
I was in the photography club in Jr. High, forgot most of the specifics.... I also would goto my dads office in nyc where he owned a pre-press company in he 70's-80's and if I visited him I would do opaquing on large photos of page layouts... thats about it.
I want to learn how to use my cameras as I feel I would make a difference in my art. I enjoyed reading your intro because you know what it means to sacrifice to make something complete and finished. That is where most of ones energies are transformed into greatness. Is knowing when to finish.
I am a fan of Monet, Dali, and other fine painters, I can creat art from my imagination or things I see... I saw a face in an acorn (nut shell) I still have that sketch. I want to learn how to use my equipment as I feel that everything happens for a reason....
In this period of my life, early 40's ... things are happening as if by "The Force" that I can not explain. I am being drawn to and my spirit is guiding me.
I had quit my job last year to the day. I worked in a retail jewelry store and have been able to succed on my own.. Married with two kids ....
looking forward to connecting and apprenticing possibly with you.

    Eric P.

    good luck in all respects

    Dear Sayvor,
Thank you very much for your posts, it seems like you have a very interesting collection and career. Your job at first glance appears particularly to be one that would have a co-beneficial relationship with large format photography in the exploration of natural forms and may reveal or spark insights that aid your design or create compelling images. You never know what you are capable of finding or capturing with a large format camera until you walk multiple times through several types of environments (or in several different places within one area that have variable characteristics) and become familiar and comfortable with the camera and lenses. I had a long "study" period of this type in the early nineties in the Adirondacks, although nobody ever formally taught me anything on these trips. I would become fascinated with one subject, and without planning shoot variations of it over and over again. For instance, It wasn't until several years into doing large format photography in the woods that I discovered small insects, caterpillars, frogs, dragonflies, etc. would sit still in cooler or morning light long enough to play an important role in a composition, even shortly after they were struck by direct light. I never thought that would be possible in a natural un-manipulated setting with large format, but it was.
Of course exploring with any camera can help with this, but there is (as you allude to) a concentrating, meditative and "spiritual" side to becoming one with your abilities in large format, and the large area of capture represented by the film plane and the sheet is a realm of both increased data and creative capacity (potential) still not possible in other formats, not to mention the various tools at your disposal in controlling perspective and manipulating the lens plane and the film plane.
I would like to talk to you further about what type of help you think you need or about your equipment and which of them may be best suited to your current needs. I have owned several different types of cameras in my time including 3 different types of hand-held 4x5s, but have never been an equipment collector. As a shooter I have found it most useful to to choose a lens board system that doesn't require you to change boards when switching cameras or formats.
Please contact me at your earliest convenience and I would be happy to talk to you further. I reside in NJ near Clifton in the area where the corners of Bergen, Essex and Passaic counties converge.

Please excuse the 3-4 days that have passed since your post, this is the busiest time of the year where I work (some 12 hour days) and I am also dealing with my photo project, so I needed to find some time to give you a proper response.
