Some 29 years ago I was heavily experimenting with two bath developers for paper.
used beers A & B modified, from the classical formula.
BUT !!! also turned the two baths as a physical developers for the Click image for larger version.

the total process is a bit complex it has to go through three to five toning baths which need awash for each time.

Very nice images, they give that image popping from the paper impression of unsharp masking.

But I am also confused by your use of "physical developer." Do you mean "physical" as opposed to "chemical" development of the silver grains?

TTBOMK, physical development there days is only common in developing extreme resolution holography plates.

Usually, "physical developer" implies that silver is added to the emulsion by the developer itself. E.g.,

It was an experiment of many years [4] to give you an idea,... and that it worked.
BUT there where many trails and errors during the four years of studying this process around the 1985's-
    this link __https://unblinkingeye.com/Articles/Physical/physical.html_Solution Physical Development - An Experimenter’s Delight Harvey W. Yurow, Ph.D. __
_ this is not the road I took !!! but had read something to this affect THE FOCAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PHOTOGRAPHY__COPY OF 1960 ??
read a lot collected old Agfa formulas 1930's and so on.
the photos a where a part of an one man exhibition "Life in rural Greece " documentary of portraits people with Landscapes. The Photos here where the landscapes.
I had tried to make a statement with fine art prints. The out come of the exhibition was this !!!! A group of Pa.so.k. syndiCats Kulturists came at the exhibition and grilled me,...
" Why did I show life in rural Greece the way I did !!!?? BUT I should have asked them [Ministry Culture] for theme approval !!!!!!

Physical Development where silver is added to the developer when the plate is developing is actually required for some processes, like the little known Albumen Negative on Glass process.

certain redevelopers do the same thing. IT8 which is cachetol based will give a sharper appearance while shifting the color to olive tone.
The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

I will try to restart that process again it had worked great with old papers but there was an extra process to get the fog out and bring up the whites.
