Goerz Hycon & Metrogon 12"

Hope a forum member can help with this problem. I have Goerz Hycon 3" f4.5 set of cells, front and rear but do not know the correct spacing to have it mounted in shutter. If anyone would share this information, it would be greatly appreciated. I also have a set of Bausch & Lomb 12" f6.3 Metrogon Cells that I would like to mount in shutter or barrel but need spacing for this as well. Geoff

I also have a set of the Hycon cells which I would love to have mounted. I haven't paid them much attention recently, but spoke with John at Focal Point a few years back about them. Apparently we could have John figure out the ideal separation, but it would be quite expensive. This would be the ideal way to do it, but another way might be to calculate the separation based on the patent data. Somewhere on APUG I had a discussion about how to do this, but the site seems down now. For what it is worth Adam at SK Grimes told me that they had mounted one sometime back in a no. 3 shutter with the instructions to put the cells as close as possible. Adam thought that this would probably not be ideal.

John, the 3"/4.5 Goerz is not a Metrogon. It is a Biogon. Ain't no f/4.5 Metrogons.

Geoffrey, Jason, I don't know how thick the cells are. You have them, so you can measure. According to the USAF data sheet for the lens the front vertex back focal distance (front vertex to film plane) is 7.313" and the back focal distance (rear vertex to film plane) is 1.5". Sorry, the data sheet doesn't give cell spacing.

No, 7.313 - 1.5 - the two cells' thicknesses (vertex to shoulder).

7.313 - 1.5 = the lens' thickness, vertex to vertex.

Sorry, John, I finally realized that you were responding to the OP's question re his 12" Metrogon.

BTW, SKGrimes has put a 12" Metrogon in shutter, should know the spacing etc. I don't recall which shutter, but I saw the thing a couple of visits to Woonsocket ago.

Hi Jason, I spoke to Jon at Focal point and he doesn't have an optical bench so could not determine correct distance. I am looking for a firm that has an optical bench that does this routinely but I'm sure it won't be cheap. I'm hoping a forum member has already done this. Geoff

I spoke to Adam about having the 12" Metrogon mounted and he said he couldn't easily do it and does not have the correct spacing. The picture of the 12" Metrogon shown on the Grimes website was done long ago and he doesn't have the date for teh spacing. Also, the shutter it is mounted in is a Luc shutter that is only the shutter with no aperture so that configuration can only be shot wide open. About the Hycon, there is distance issues where the rear of the cells need to be very close together making a standard shutter with the separate iris perhaps a poor candidate. I'm considering using a Volute shutter where the blades open to the aperture opening that is set so the blades are also the aperture making it possible to get the cells very close together. Geoff

Goerz. Hycon is a camera manufacturer.
