Brush Size to file Size question

This is a very basic question,

When I am working on very large files, 300mb or larger , I cannot seem to get a big enough Brush to Burn or apply adjustments.

No matter what I have tried getting a really large brush is not possible.

Smaller files no problem , the brush size goes as large as I want.

I like a very large brush when I am burning in edges but on the larger files the brush size is limited.

I am currently still working on CS3 suite. Is there something I am missing here with this?

No. The brush size is limited to 2500 pixels. If your image is 2000 pixels wide, this seems huge. If your image is 20 000 pixels wide, this might be too small...

An alternate method of burning edges, which should work with CS3.

Use the selection tool to select a circle or oval that covers most of the image except the corners that you want to burn.

Invert the selection. Feather the edges. Apply a new adjustment layer to that selection to use the curve tool. Darken the edges with the curve, just take a point in the middle and darken it bit by bit until you like it. Since you're applying the adjustment to a layer, it's easy enough to change or toss if you don't like it.

Selection (generally by magic wand in CS4), adjust selection (feather etc.), and a curve layer is how I do "dodging" and "burning" now. I can equally dodge or burn two non-connected areas if I want, or make a few layers. With 200MB scans this gets a bit much, but you can apply the "Guide file" technique as listed above if your files get too large.

Hi Bill

I was aware of this method, not sure if I like it, I find this problem happening
on the fly so to speak , always in mid edit. I have lots of power, therefore my computer is pretty fast for my work.
This problem always shows itself , I get around it but with a smaller brush , but I try to mimic darkroom dodging and burning and in the darkroom I can hit large areas easily.

thanks for the responses, I am just glad I was not missing a easy brush command to make it larger , I would be pissed.

The others have probably zeroed in on the solution for you but I would mention that it is always good to check to make sure you have up to date video drivers when it comes to PS brush problems. Disappearing brushes, half brushes, etc., are common issues often solved by updating old video drivers. I speak from experience learned the hard way!
