I saw a 12" Gundlach Manhattan Equi-Focus for sale - it's in barrel, glass looks clean. I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything about it - it doesn't LOOK convertible but that doesn't mean anything by itself. Was this some kind of soft-focus lens, or something else? Maybe a contemporary early Dagor clone?
Scott-- I think equi focus is just the abbreviation for equivalent focus (aka focal length), so it could be a variety of Gundlach models. The soft focus portraits lenses were called Hyperions or Equal Diffusion (close but no cigar) lenses. Probably a convertible anastigmat if it's f/6.8.
I Know it's not a Hyperion. I believe the same fellow has or has a 18" Hyperion for $3500. This is the Diffussed focus lens.
While he has this for under $300.If this was the 12" Hyperion it would be $2000-$3000.
Plus it would be a triple convertible.12" 18" 30".
The lens your asking about may be a later rapid rectilinear or such. More than likely symmetrical optical construction
That's about what I thought. Just the wording "Equi-Focus" seems a bit odd, because of the way it's used. Makes it sound like a model name, not just a statement of focal length.
Equivalent Focal Length was the "correct" technical tag found on a few objectives for some decades. EFL also appears on some UK lenses.
Second that. Mine "Ilex 8x10 Symmetrical" phisically looks very much like Equi Focus Gundlach, I am researching about at the moment.Originally Posted by Louis Pacilla
