Cool photos. I was amused to see the anti-piracy notice printed at the bottom of #15.
Fantastic pictures.
Thanks for posting the link.
Pete.
Quite interesting, many thanks for posting the link.
Great link. Thanks
I live out here and am familiar with these places. I recognized one shot as a place I've hunted antelope. Many of these buildings are still there. There was another photographer from around 1900 or so that lived in nearby Chadron, NE. He shot very similar stuff on large format plates. THere is a display of them in the back building at Wall Drug, in Wall, SD. There are several hundred prints from his collection. I'm sort of the current incarnation of both these guys as I daily wander the Northern Plains with my cameras. Another famous photographer from around 1890--1910 was of course, Solomon Butcher.
One thing that has really changed are the Black Hills. In the time these shots were taken, they were an open savannah. During the past 100 years forest fires were aggressively suppressed and trees grew much thicker. The area has recently been hit by numerous wild fires, and then pine beetles. It is reverting back to savannah. There are still a good number of buffalo roaming there. Most of these are in Custer State Park and also Pine Ridge Res.

Great link. I was stationed near Rapid City back in the late 70's to the early 80's and visited many of the sites in these photos. I have lots of photos from that time. I celebrated my 21st birthday with a few drinks in Deadwoods Old Style Saloon #10 in 1979.
Great link....just a little historical note concerning picture #26 Comanche, he is preserved at the Natural History Museum at the University of Kansas.
great link Richard.
I remember Commanche from childhood. He was in a glass display case, kinda dusty and moth eaten back in the late '50's. I wonder if he is still on display
