I have a range of ULF cameras now: 5x12, 11x14, and 14x17. I'm planning on using all of them in the studio, and I'd like to use them with my studio stand that I've just acquired. What would you recommend for a head that would work well with all three? I know the big trick will be the 5x12 because I want to be able to use it vertically as well as horizontally. I'm not terribly crazy about Majestic heads because they have the geared control in one direction only, although if someone can make a compelling argument I'm open to persuasion. I suspect the Sinar heads have too small a contact patch for the 14x17, and that's probably true for anything with a quick-release plate, period. Are there any ball heads that would work with the bigger cameras, or am I still going to be looking at the same contact-patch problem? I know the Ries A250-2 has a nice 6"x6" contact patch, but will it work on a studio stand? Any feedback and input is appreciated.
What I currently have in heads that MIGHT work are a Gitzo 1570 pan-tilt, but that's currently dedicated to the 1420 legset, and a Bogen 3039, but that has a quick release plate (fine for the smaller cameras - 35mm up to whole plate).
