I had the same problem as you, the projected image was about the size of a postcard with the head fully extended, but I had a diffuser head (I'm unsure about condensers). I was told to get a recessed lens board for my 50mm lens called Latub which solved my problem. Now it is possible to print up to a 20" x 24".

I have exactly the same set-up. The only thing I cannot judge from your pictures is the course focusing knob, nicely pointed out by the image of Allen.

If you are printing 35mm with the 50/80 condensor combination and a 35 mm lens, the lens stages are very close to each other, you'll hardly see the bellows, not like the image you ahev shown. I do not think you need a recessed lens plate.

Ditto on slippage of the knobs, I too sometimes have to help the lens stage by hand to move it up.

    Best,

    Cor

    How did this work out?
Have you managed a larger print?
