    Great photo!
Did you move the front element to the rear or simply take it out and shoot with the rear elements? I've seen 1/2 Petzval mentioned as a potential soft foucs lens many times but without a great deal of detail as to the best way to use it. Looks like you've found it though!

    Hi Alan,

I have a few old petzval Projection lenses that have image circles too small for the 8 x 10 as is, but if you remove the front and rear elements and try them individually, the focal lengths (and image circle) are normally bigger. I think this is the front element. This lens assembled has a focal length of about 5 - 6 inches. The one element that I shot this with has a focal length of about 12". The lenses I have all seem to be about the same in that as single elements, they are sort of but not quite sharp focus in the center of the image and get soft quickly as you go towards the outside of the image. I use these a lot in my portrait/figure work.

    Nude Conversation

Gelatin-silver photograph on Agfa Classic MCC III VC FB photographic paper, image size 24.6cm X 19.6cm, from a 8x10 Tmax 400 negative exposed in a Tachihara 810HD triple extension field view camera fitted with a Fujinon-W 300mm f5.6 lens. Signed, titled, and stamped verso.

Unclad people left to themselves tend not to bounce about photographic studios interacting with a catalogue of unlikely props. Nor do they arrange themselves in curious tableaux illustrating some point from the history of art. They tend to fall into attitudes of simple repose as in this photograph.

The camera is very close and the model's legs pass under the tripod. The conversation was about visual ideas and, out of curiosity, the model asked if it was all right to look back at the viewer of the picture, to stare at them the way they might stare at her image. I suggested a facial expression sort of "direct" and "knowing" would be ideal. I think she nailed it!

She's beautiful!! I love the first image, the others are more obvious about her hiding her face, I kind of like the second but I think the first is best.

    Interesting push choice, why?
