    LED's are ideal but expensive last I looked.

    LEDs do not have an afterglow, not in any way, shape, or form. That's why they are used for fiber optic communications. Of course, a circuit could be added for that.

    The problem is that they are very expensive for screw-in replacements. Over the long run they will save money, more than a CFL will.

    Another problem with LED screw-in bulbs is that the light output per bulb is much too low. You need too many bulbs to get a decent light level in the room.
