Edge Masking Sharpening doesn't work in greyscale

    Hi all,

here is the method exactly i am using.

    http://www.earthboundlight.com/photo...tml?source=rss

the results look like a crap, sharpness-wise, even the standard USM is much better.

I used this method before in LAB mode, works great.

    not sure why.
I think the High-pass masking will be the same.

Sharpening depends on the image, naturally.

Can you show us what you are trying to sharpen - or a section of it ? Someone might have an answer for you.

(For the record, I have found that with larger format images, less sharpening is required. Sometimes I sharpen my 5x7 negatives almost not at all, since sharpening introduces artifacts that spoil the analog quality of the image. This is another reason why I prefer 5x7 over 4x5 and smaller.)

ok, its a scan portion of 57tmax, iq scan.

1st one is the Edge scan version

next is straight USM, notice the noise.

Sharpening workflow is usually broken up into 3 separate functions, capture sharpening, creative, and output.

Capture sharpening is usually a modest overall sharpen applied with your SW from the scan, or your digital capture in camera raw. Almost always necessary to some extent to tighten up the image from its raw data.

Creative is used to "fix" things locally and usually applied with a brush or selective tool- ie cutting the haze in the sky with a local adjustment specifically for that area.

Output sharpening is a final step before printing or uploading to the web, and is specific to the size, dpi, and nature of the print surface etc. IE - matte papers can take much more sharpening than glossy stock (looks terrible on screen) but the final print looks great.

Jeff Schewe and the late Bruce Frasier have great tutorials on sharpening workflow, and there are great plug ins for PS that will automate the process. Free trial downloads to work with. Even if you don't end up buying the SW they will help you gain an understanding of the process.

The workflow you cite is from 5 years ago, and much has improved in the current versions of PS, and LR- might be worth the investment to streamline the process and have better tools to boot.

There is an excellent overview of sharpening here- http://www.dpbestflow.org/image-editing/sharpening

    Thanks Bruce.

    Stupid me, Stupid question!
fingered it out last night, its due to my poor edge-selecting/USM skill.
really need to improve my photoshop capability now. thought that I was hybridized already, but, not really, still more a poor analogue boy.

    Cheers
