soft focus landscape

Going way soft... While out shooting Saturday I switched from my slight shorter Verito to a longer Hyperion and glanced at the out of focus ground glass and was stunned with the happy shapes on the ground glass. I popped in a film holder, wound the shutter, and make an exposure. I rotated the camera slightly for another part of the scene... Right side up and upside down photo included to you can see what I saw better than my cell phone snap shows. 9" Gundlach hyperion soft focus lens, 4x5 FP4+ in pyrocat hdc. I had a great time this weekend spending two afternoons in the woods shooting 16 sheets of 4x5.

Love the 722. Both are awesome. The Hyperions are among my favorite lenses of all the different soft focus I've owned and used.

Yes.. Tillman Crane knows what he's doing! I've been to two Tillman Crane / Russ Young soft focus workshops. Tillman taught me how to do cyanotypes at his alt-process darkroom.

Thanks! The Hyperion is basically irreplaceable. Scarce and working well for my uses the more I use it.

That's just lovely, like pearls in the snow...

Thanks.. The glowing pearl in soft focus is a nearly forgotten part of the charm of old fashion soft focus. It's also part of the focusing frustration... We are initially trained to think that point sources of light are smallest when they are in focus... Not here.. We've got good small point source mixed with a generous glow like we associate with out of focus.. In reality both are true and we have to pick the right blend when focusing.

One more variation on the pearl, then the light shifted enough so the icy track was shadowed.

I went out Sunday toward the end of the day for a purposely different light and mood. Lower light, so Tmax 400 film. In the distance from this icy patch is a glowing area along the ground; another little pond to explore which I did in the last two pictures.

Made a lens board for my 5x7 Linhof so I could use my 8 1/4 Verito. On 4x5 it's too long for me, and on 8x10 it goes super swirly outside of its sweet-spot, so 5x7 was a natural fit. Shot a few sheets this past evening out in one of my favorite forested areas, here's my favorite.
