How much detail does the neg have in the shadows? This image calls for a lighter mood, don't be afraid to blow out the highlights of the background.

Michael, I think the exposure is pretty much okay. I should have used a different lens, with a little more detail towards the edge of the frame. My Petzval barely covers the format.

Thanks! It wasn't exactly how I visualized it so I think I'll go back and try again (I was hoping for a better balance of ambient and indoor light.) I had wanted to take this photo for a long time and finally made it down to the school last week. Do other people have these: shots that you see when you don't have a camera with you and think, "I should take that picture," but it takes months or years to get out the camera and make the trek?

Here is my window. This is really an abandoned house down the street. My house is a little nicer than this one. 8x10 print on Lodima, developed in Ansco 130.

I like your shot you finally did. And boy do I share your experience! Basically, I see an interesting image every other day and never get back to take it. It may take months or years to shoot something that's lingering in my brain. Bad thing that I don't carry my view camera in my pocket like my cell phone. Or maybe not. There may be an asset in pondering upon an image for a long time....

    Peter,

Glad I'm not the only one. I think this photo was in my head over three years. Feels good to have finally gotten it out!

At long last you get all your gear ready. Go to the place where your image is 'waiting'. When you get there the window/tree/whatever is gone!
