Frank, I just saw this. Don't know if JetBlue does your preferred city in Europe, but I think they fly out of JFK and EWR.

My brother's been traveling frequently to Italy. Often it's best (cheapest) through Ireland. He's found a big difference in seating between Aer Lingus (OK) and United (violates the the Geneva Convention).
Yeah you could just go on a tour taking portraits around the country.
I heard on the radio this morning that hire cars are in short supply in some European countries. Book one early.
Enjoy your trip.
Pete.
Frank, also include Newark Airport (EWR) in your kayak or sidestep searches. I had to go to UK last spring and found I could get from MI, through Newark to Bristol about $300-400 cheaper than through NYC. Same was true for London, but I was headed to the southwest part of the country anyway.
On the other hand, not too many people book 2 1/2 years in advance.
There are some good deals if you surf on Kayak. As others have said, the best deals are in the winter / early spring.
I highly recommend NOT flying a US-based airline. It's only a matter of time before they start charging for cushions and bathroom use.
I just tonite booked a ticket for my high school son to return to the Netherlands in late May. The cheapest ticket I found was on Icelandic. I go out of my way to avoid any US or UK airlines.
