Definitely morning for me. I immediately was reminded of my trip to Idaho last year!
Morning.

Thanks Randy, Brian, and Philip. The morning photo is the one I lean more to also. I was curious if the mood in the morning light is more attractive over a photo that has a blue sky and has more of a daytime feel to it.

To me the morning light provides a nicer distribution of light and shadow teasing out the different tones in the landscape, creating a very rich visual experience. The greater contrast in the afternoon light comes at the cost of reduced tonal range, it’s a nice image, but to me visually less rich.
PM. The AM first draws your eyes to the background because it's lighter which is weird. The subject is the river and foreground which requires it be lighter as in the PM shot.

Alright, I think tf and Alan point out strengths and weaknesses with both images. I agree that the lighter background draws your eye to it and usually that might be a good thing, but maybe its too much and draws away from the river, beach and tent. But I think the river stands out more in the morning photo than the PM shot. I like that the warm early morning light gives it more of a mystical and sense of awe. My thoughts are that the AM shot is more about emotion and the PM shot is about place. And although I was initially bummed that someone pitched a tent on the sand bar, I now like the perspective that it adds to the photo. That man is insignificant and can be a part of nature.

AM is a better shot, but the sky upper left is blown out. If you could bring it down a few stops that would really improve it. The afternoon shot is better exposed, but more pedestrian, almost documentary in nature.
My 5 cents.
