The problems that Claudio discussed are, in essence, a small civil war between highly organized criminals and a badly organized not particularly effective central government. The US' only contribution to it is continued criminalization of the drug trade. But a discussion US drug policy doesn't belong in this forum.

That was true up until about a year ago, but now things are spilling over to the general public, not at a rate perceptible to Americans, but definitely to Mexicans, who are pretty wigged out that the narcos are no longer just shooting at each other. As I said (and I think we agree), things are still OK for the most part, but there are serious clouds on the horizon that could either break up or condense. It definitely impacts my sense of moving there on a long-term basis.
