Correct Term Used For Push\Pull Processing

What would be the correct way to give instructions to a lab for push\pull processing when using the zone system ? Eg, say if i shoot a 5x4 tranny exposed for the highlights
& i want the development pushed 1 stop to bring the shadows where i want them, would i just tell them i want it Pushed 1 stop or is there a correct term ? Sorry if this question sounds a bit stupid.

I always indicate on the work order "Normal Development". If special I indicate "Push one stop" etc. Most sophisticated labs should be able to follow directions for both color and B&W.

Re: Correct Term Used For Push\Pull Processing

Well, the as described by Ansel Adams, pulling one stop should be described as N-1 and pushing one stop as N+1. However, even though it is the prescribed nomenclature, nobody really cares, so its a bit like ending a sentence with a preposition.

It also carries the danger that a smude can make a - look like a + or vice versa. I've never had a lab not understand what I was asking for when I said push or pull.

No matter how you choose to describe it however, always give the lab a phone number where you can be reached if anything is unclear. I've also never had a lab hesistate to clarify BEFORE running film.

Finally, most labs apprecaite a heads up as to exactly what kind of film you're giving them. (I.e., not just b&w, but Ilford Delta 100.)

    Good luck. -Adam
