Superb, Gabe. Good things come to those who wait. Sometimes.

    Thanks Philip.

To be honest I was very close to giving up and leaving, but stubbornness won out

This is where a ~ 10 stop ND filter helps filtering the people ….

    Good for you mate.

I get so exasperated waiting for people to clear out of my shots - I too wonder if I have become invisible.

As to your question: with an inordinate amount of patience. Took about 90 mins of waiting there, set up for the shot, with endless streams of people merrily carrying on in the frame as if I didn't even exist.

Excellent photograph. I had a similar situation last spring near Marfa, Texas, shooting the Prada store art exhibit. Had my 4x5 set up with no one other than my wife present, when a young couple drove up. To their credit, seeing my setup, they politely asked if they could walk up to the exhibit knowing they would be in the shot. I of course said yes, as I was still fiddling with the camera. Well, they lingered and lingered. Meanwhile, still more people drove up and milled around in front of the store exhibit. I’m standing there, dark slide in hand, ready to trip the shutter as still more folks show up and stand in my shot.
Long story short, my wife got a nice iPhone shot of the building with no people in it, and I, losing patience (as was my wife) I finally tripped the shutter to get my shot featuring the young couple still standing in front of the exhibit staring down at their phones. In hindsight, I should’ve asked the couple when they first showed up to just give me an eighth of a second (or whatever my exposure was) and I’ll be done.

Thanks. At least that first couple asked, as you say. In my case not one person did. In a similar situation (in York Minster), again after a long period of waiting and receiving no volunteered courtesy, I eventually had to ask people to kindly stay out of my shot for 30 seconds.

Unfortunately many today just do not possess common courtesy, or are too self-absorbed to even realise their transgression.
