I love the inclusion of the people here... adds an interesting touch to the picture. I read it as a commentary on photography in an interesting way.

They are lightening triggers. They were part of a workshop to photograph lightening that was occuring on the South rim (distant rim) Those things were set so sensitive they were constantly tripping their cameras with no success. If they had a camera converted to full spectrum with a 720nm or 850nm filter on, they would have got lightening which was almost exclusively behind the clouds. A UV filter of about 380nm or so, might also have picked up lightening.

Thanks! It's tough to find a good composition when rushing to get setup in the early-morning light and find something as the sun is starting to rise. I just grabbed the Mercury / 47mm and made a good guess at a composition with the tree in the foreground jutting out and shot 3 sheets (one color sheet to be developed).
