    Copal Shutter question

    Hi,

I am looking at buying a Caltar W 90mm F8 lens in a copal shutter. I will not see the lens before buying it. The seller described the shutter as a copal N.0.0, would this be the same as what is generally called a Copal O?

    Thanks,

    Ed Haeuser

I'll bet you are right. He probably mis-typed "Copal No. 0" and put in an extra 'dot'

Thanks, I'm not all that familiar with the sizes of copal. Is there such a thing as a Copal 00?

    Thanks,

Ed, as I know Copal made never shutters in size #00. But you can ask the seller, if the mounting hole on the lensboard is 34,6mm it is a shutter size #0.

    Re: Copal Shutter question

It's an early Caltar lens as it's not a Rodenstock 90mm they only come as f4.5 & f6.8. Caltar were rebadged Schneider lenses at one point, and the Super Angulon is normally in a Copal N0.0 shutter, but a few early ones were in the Copal N0.00 shutter.

Before Schneider the Caltars were US made Illex lenses. They 90mm isn't supposed to be as good as the later versions.

    Re: Copal Shutter question

The early 90mm f:8 Super Angulons were in Compur No.00, not Copal.

And, if Lynn Jones sees Ian's post, I'm sure he will staunchly defend the Ilex-Calumet Wide Field Caltar. I certainly have never had any reason to question mine - and I also have the Schneider. The Ilex is in the 5x7 bag and the Schneider is in the 4x5. Does that tell you something about the coverage?

    I have a Caltar W-II 90mm f/8 lens. It's a rebadged Super Angulon, and is in a Copal 0 shutter.

    Re: Copal Shutter question

Ole's right some were in the Compur 00, not a Copal 0, I was thinking of shutter size forgetting the brand. I have a Linhof selected 65mm f8 SA in a Compur 00 and it's my worst LF shutter, as in least practical.

Perhaps I should have said "supposed by some" because you hear quite different opinions
