Rabbit Ears
Hello Jim,, I like your set-up but for me the lighting is just a bit flat.. I have a feeling that if a guy were to use one softbox (maybe a strip bank) directly overhead letting light spill over on to the background and maybe just graze the front of the subject you'd get better texture and separation ... or you could spotlight the cross and let everything else fade out
Just recently they cleaned out my mother's basement and found all kinds of things buried from my childhood... I was going to do the same kind of shot when ever I was able to get some film.. thx for posting
regards Steve

Steve,
Thanks for the feedback and I agree about the lighting. I'm trying to fix that today. I have fluorescent studio lights I bought for fine art repro work and even without the umbrellas, the light from the fluorescent bulbs is too soft. Great for art repro, but not good for what I'm trying to do here.
This set was lit with one umbrella above, behind and on the left side of the camera. Another light was used to bring up the EV of the background to split the difference between the readings of lighter and darker areas of the objects that were set against the background to maintain some contrast.
I'm going to try this again with the background a bit darker and use a standard tungsten light bulb close by to illuminate the set for a bit more drama. We'll see what happens.
Good luck with your similar attempt,
Jim

Christopher,
Amazing set with beautiful soft colors. At first I did not like the white funnel on the left side as it kept drawing my eye, but after looking at the image for a while, I realized it brings attention to the dark bottles which would othewise be lost and the brighter material at the center brings the eye back to the center.
Nicely done autumn theme.
