Here's a memorial plaque to Henricus Aldrich on wall of the nave of Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford. It's not the first skull and wings I've come across. Presumably it's to indicate that because the dead person (skull) was a good person he's being transported into heaven on angel's wings? Hmmm ...
