    Comparing forums

It is interesting to compare some numbers from different forums. Luminous Landscape which is much broader in focus than this forum, and generally widelyl known as a very successful site, has these numbers:

    LL-
members have made a total of 182,684 posts
    We have 29,248 registered members

    vs.

    LF-
    Threads: 32,221, Posts: 340,521,
Registered Members: 13,693, Active Members: 2,234

As you can see from this that this is a very active forum. We have a little less than half the registered members as LL but these members make nearly twice the number posts. We have a very active membership.

Surely this forum must be in the top ten of photography sites on the web? Depends on how you crunch the numbers I guess. Anyone have stats from any of the other big sites?
    Thanks,
    Kirk

Open Photography Forums-- Posts: 51,354, Members: 5,840

Rangefinder Forum-- Posts: 744,634, Members: 25,088

    Graflex.org-- 26735 posts, 2065 registered users

    hybridphoto.com-- 7,488 posts, 1,414 members

f295 lensless imaging forums-- Posts: 69,950, Members: 1,735

Perhaps you ought to factor in the number of advertisements or other interruptions.

This forum has none. If you divide the number of posts by zero, the result is... undefined.

We do have a smattering of ads and interruptions masquerading as posts, but generally our signal:noise ratio is pretty good., I'd say.

    Re: Comparing forums

maybe a little off topic, but I think we should encorage more image posting! I enjoy looking (and participating!) in the various image posting threads, I think we should do more of this!

Most websites seem to be geared around cameras, techniques, and hardware (intentionally, or nonintentionally just due to the nature of forums as 'help desks'), I just love looking at peoples photographs! Looking at their compositions, and ways of portraying their subject gives me alot of inspiration! (since real tonal qualities and other things can't be viewed very well over the web, but compositions can!) More so on this forum, because almost every photograph I see posted, looks great!

    Thank goodness for choice.

Both APUG and this Forum are well run, informative and useful, many people are members of both.

    Keep up the good work.

    Re: Comparing forums

Perhaps a visit to Alexa.com will give some better comparative statistics.

According to Alexa.com over the last 3 months the number of global internet users visiting the LF Forum has decreased by 24%.

APUG has notably less traffic than the LF Forum although during the last week in May traffic was very similar.

The number of page views for Luminous Landscape is much higher than either APUG or the LF Forum during the same period.

The percent of global Internet users who visit Luminous Landscape over a 3 month average was 0.00697%.

For APUG the percentage was 0.00071%.

For the LF Forum the percentage was 0.00115%.

The vast majority of visitors to the LF forum come from the U.S. - 68%.

56.5 % of visitors to APUG.ORG are from the U.S.

About 45% of Luminous Landscape users come from the U.S.

And about 41% of visitors to Photo.net are from the U.S.

    Apug.org has a traffic rank of: 151,175.

    Largeformatphotography.info has a traffic rank of: 102,791.

    Luminous-landscape.com has a traffic rank of: 20,474.

    Photo.net has a traffic rank of: 1,864.

The smaller the traffic ranking the more active a site is.

One must remeber that Alexia statistics are based on Alexia toolbar usage.

It would be interesting to view Google traffic stats for further comparisons.

Does this mean if your not using the Alexia toolbar, your stats are not recorded? I've often wonder about this and Google Analytics as well.

I just checked flickr.com; 5145 photos uploaded in the last *minute*. The largest myspace photography group has about 80,000 members.
