    Silverfast Scanner>ICC Printer Profiles?!

The lastest version of Silverfast Ai6 Studio will contain a method for utilizing your scanner to create custom ICC profiles for your printer. New approach to creating profiles. Could be interesting.

This has been done before, so its not new, but if it works well it'll be very useful.

I imagine it's a bit of a technical challenge to get this to work well enough to approach the results from a system with a dedicated colorimeter. They're trying to profile one device - the printer - through another device which is itself often variable enough to need a custom profile - the scanner. There's also the perennial question of how many different color patches you need to get a good profile.

If they can deliver the goods it will be a very nice option.

Agreed, I'll believe it when I see it.

I've got the newest version for both my Epson V750 and a Nikon 8000. Have to admit I haven't tried using their custom generated profiles yet.

Like to hear if it is really worth going down that road.

How many patches all depends on how much time you want to spend on it. Personally it feels like counting the number of angels on the head of a needle.

It depends on the system, no doubt. The only printer profiling system I've had occasion to try myself is the Eye-One system. It takes maybe an extra five or ten minutes to scan a 918-patch target with the i1 colorimeter compared to the standard 288-patch target or the "easy" 45-patch target. The extra time required in the software after that is nil. In all, it's not a huge burden.

I don't believe that those of use with dedicated film scanners like the Nikon 8000/9000 will be able to take advantage of this option.... Only flatbeds.
