Wide Angle lens for 8x10

Can anyone tell me what the shortest focal length lens that can be used on an 8x10 camera. I would like to know if i could use a 65mm lens with full coverage.

Of course the Goerz Hypergon has been out of production since the 1920's or so, and costs upwards of $2000 when one comes up for sale. Generally speaking, the widest lenses that are easily usable, available and affordable (with full covwerage) are the 120mm f/8 lenses from Nikon and Schneider. They approximate a 65mm lens on 4x5- tht's pretty wide.

It's either the 120/8 SW or the 110XL. Schneider 120/8 doesn't cover like the Nikkor 120/8 or the Schneider 110XL.

Fotoman has the Nikkor 120 as being 17mm vertical, 15mm horizontal equivalent in 35mm terms, and the Schneider 110XL as being 15mm vertical, 13mm horizontal in 35mm terms.

The 58XL is the equivalent of the 120 with the same 17mm vertical and 15mm horizontal. The 110 would be maybe a 50mm? in 4X5. The 47XL has a vertical of 14mm, horizontal of 12mm.

The 65mm 45 equivalent for an 810 would be maybe around 130mm's? and closer to the 150SW which is the equivalent of the 72XL on 45.

I use a Nikkor 120 mm for my widest. I use it, but not nearly as often as I would my 65 mm on 4x5.

There's something about when shooting 8x10 where I feel the I can produce most of my images without going to extreme focal lengths (very wide or very long).

My favorite 8x10 wide angle is a 240 mm.

Oh, almost forgot. I do use a 3" focal length 8x10 pinhole camera with great success. Of course not 'tack' sharp, but amazingly sharp none the less for a pinhole camera. If you scan and add unsharp masking, my friends can't believe the images I make with the Leonardo pinhole camera were shot without a lens.

Just a cheap, fun way to go extremely wide with an 8x10.

I also have the 120 Nikon but it is not a lens i use much. It is very wide on 8x10 good to have in the bag though. A 210 coated Dagor is my favorite WA and the 240 a close number 2

Which is about a 32mm equivalent for 35mm. Seems like a long focal length, but things are not the same in the LF world and that 240mm surely looks like a very nice wide indeed!!!

Roughly 28mm's in 35mm terms...

I would have to vote the 150SW as the best choice for a wide with the IC and those that like more extreme views. But it's a beast vs. the Dagor (plasmat type?) or light 240's...

I think it all depends on what is intended to be shot, but anything in the 150-250mm range seems to be a fine wide zone. 110-120 gives you the most extreme and no movements w/exception of the 120 that gives "tiny" movements, hence, why it stays in Jan's bag or at home since it requires a rare situation to take advantage of it for the full 810 sheet.

For the longest time My only lens was a 240 Caltar on my 8x10. It has performed beautifully for many situations. I now have a 360 and 480 but tend to use the 240 more often than anything. I would like a wolly 159 at some point but it would be only for extreme situations.
