Licensing question

First off, thanks to all of the frequent contributors for the great info. they routinely share, it is much appreciated. I'm a relative newbie to the world of stock photography and I struggle to quote usage prices. I've been recently contacted by a local newspaper which is publishing a glossy tourism type magazine(10inchX12inch) and they want one of my shots for the cover. The press run will be about 10,000 copies, and will be locally distributed. Any advice regarding fair pricing for this sort of usage would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Create an account on gettyimages.com, corbis.com, alamy.com, and use their price calculators. Personally, I'd ask in the $400-$700 range.

That's good advice QT. I would also suggest purchasing a copy of fotoqQuote or the fotoBiz software if you plan to license more images in the future.

Using FotoQuote, probably closer to $1000, but there are several variables that can change that. At the very least, you can download FotoQuote, use it in demo mode, and find out Brochure pricing levels. At least it would get you closer to a reasonable amount. Remember that you are providing a unique image, and not something that they could grab off a stock photography portal.

Editorial rates are always lower than rates for marketing materials.

I used to use a software equivalent to FotoQuote, but I don't see much of the point anymore, now that you can access the price calculators of agencies that *do* license.
