    Michael A. Smith in color

I was surprised when I came across some new work by Michael A. Smith - he is doing big color portraits.

Read the link to the "biography". It says he's using 8x10 and has a bit of backstory on the series. Doesn't say if they are contact prints or if they are Type C or Ilfochrome or something else.

    Two questions...

    1. Who has $15,000?

    2. Who has enough wall space for a 72 X 58" print?!

(Answers: (so no one burns me) 1: Museums, hardcore collectors 2: Museums, hardcore collectors)

    I have the wall space.

Well, I looked at the jpegs on the Vintage Works site for the first time. I must say, the color is all wrong--or at least partly wrong--wrong enough so that the photographs are essentially misrepresented. And the green color background used is simply awful. So, out of courtesy I would ask that these photographs not be judged by these jpegs.

I fully understand that even if the color were right, many would not like these photographs. Fair enough. Not everyone has to like everything and certainly, not everyone has to like my photographs. In fact, I suspect most will dislike these portraits. C'est la vie.

I was prepared to dislike this series on several levels, but when I came face to face with them at PhotoLA, I did a pivot. They are quite unlike Avedon's American West work (which I also like, by the way) in their sympathetic treatment of the subjects, and they are unceasingly interesting. I find them stunning. One of them ended up being the only photograph I bought at PhotoLA. I must admit, however, that much of the discussion in this thread has been recapitulated in my own family, and as we speak the image leans against a wall in an upstairs hallway and may or may not get extended hang time in my house. It is important work--and that's my opinion.

Just to add to the fun, the 11x14 contact size (that's paper size) are "pigment prints." Does this mean inkjet?

Prints are available in three editions. Sizes refer to paper size and the image size is smaller and allows for a substantial white border. In the 14 x 11 in. contact size, the edition is 10, plus 4 APs and starts at $1,500 and is a pigment print. In the 40 x 30 in. size, the edition is 6, plus 2 APs and starts at $6,000. In the 72 x 58 inch size, the edition is only 3, plus 1 AP and starts at $15,000.

    i assume so.

money aside, i'd be more comfortable with a 14" convict hanging above the couch than a 72" convict.

    The "11x14s" are 8x10s.

    The 8x10s are inkjet prints.

The larger prints are digital c-prints.

What is the world coming to?

I am still working mostly in black and white and making contact prints.

    Michael,

I'm curious, why inkjets for the smaller prints and digital c-prints for the larger? Just wondering why not use one process for all sizes. Would I be correct in assuming this will be a Lodima book when completed? I'm curious to see a Lodima color book as all the ones I own are quadtone (I believe), but all are of the highest quality.
