Whats in back of you is the past and whats in front of you is the future now in the middle you have choices to make for yourself:
Depends upon the scanner. Some people find SilverFast not too user friendly, while others think it is very intuitive. Just getting a preview image that is very close to what you see in PhotoShop can be an advantage. Some manufacturer scanning software is quite good (oXYgen from Creo/Kodak), while other scanning software is terrible. Best thing to do is download the free trial and give it a run on your scanner.

I agree with Gordon in that it depends on you.
How well do you know PhotoShop or whatever photo-editing program you use?
I have found that Silverfast cannot do anything more than can be done in PS with filters, curves, color balance, etc.
I will admit that learning the complexities of Silverfast is not something I made the time to do. For me it is easier to just use Epson's software to get the image and PhotoShop to do the work after the digital image has been captured. If you have the time to learn to use Silverfast, I am pretty sure that overall it will reduce the amount of time it takes for you to get an image from pre-scan to print.
