You might want to experiment, and see how much better is the quality at 4800 ppi, compared to 2400 ppi. I have an Epson 4990, and there is a small difference, but one has to really strain to find it.
Yes, the 4800 ppi file is 400% of the size of the 2400 ppi file, but most of that additional information is just redundant pixels. It looks like the image is only 5-10% better.
If you are trying to squeeze out that additional 5-10% from an 8x10 negative, it's probably best that try a professional drum scan.
