    Epson 3800 and glossy prints

I need a new printer, and considering the Epson 3800 and the HP Z3100. The HP is much more expensive, takes up more room, and has only a limited ability to print on cut sheets - but with the gloss enhancer it does a great job on satin and gloss paper. I have not seen any Epson 3800 prints on glossy and am wondering how good a job it does on glossy stock. (I only print black and white.)

I use Crane Museo Silver Rag which isn't really glossy...more semi glossy. It does print very well on my 3800 on both b/w and color.

On Premium Glossy Paper the white areas tend not to be as glossy as the printed area. Other than that it is a fine printer. I use mine primarily for matte type papers but I like the capability to change over to gloss with a change in paper. FWIW I use a gloss laminate for my commercial clients on matte paper and it looks terrific. A lot of people claim that silver prints are better than inkjet because the print looks like it's "in the paper". Well the laminate is like that. The 3800 will be hard to beat for the money.

I use the Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl surface, which is a semi-gloss/pearl finish and it is excellent. I like it better than the Epson Premium Luster, which to me looks like plastic. The Hahnemuhle feels like a fiber print.

I also use Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl, for exhibit prints in b/w & color and the result is excellent.

I use both Museo Silver Rag (for b&w prints) and Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl (for colour prints) and I'm extremely pleased with these papers as I've been using them. So much so that I can't see using a darkroom again (gasp!).
