Smile Fluid mounting negatives on an Epson V-750

Is there anybody out there fluid mounting their negatives on the Epson V-750-Pro? I have used the Aztec fluids and wet mount tray that comes with the scanner but I'm now wondering if there are better scanning trays available elsewhere. Or any tips would be helpful.

    Thanks.

Some folks here use Prazio Anti-Newton Ring Spray and mount directly on the glass...do a search for it.

The issue with scanning right on the glass is whether that's the optimum height. I've heard anywhere from about .5 mm to 3mm being optimum, depending on the actual scanner. Doug Fisher makes a good looking, reasonably priced wet-mount unit for the Epson. I think it's at betterscanning.com. It's better to mount to the bottom of the glass carrier. That way, the sensor only passes through an addition, and very thin, layer of Mylar. If you scan through a piece of glass, this can lead to worse results, as the thicker the substrate is, the more it'll effect the optical system.

I use the fluid mounting station from betterscanning.com with two scanners, an Epson 4990 and an EverSmart Pro, and highly recommend it. It will fit many of the current and past generation Epson scanners, including the 4870, 4990, V700 and V750.

A fluid mounting system will not transform your consumer flatbed into a drum scanner, but it will allow you to get as much quality as possible from the scanner.

Sandy's right. The big advantage is that wet-mounting keeps the negative flat.

Try the Prazio solution first. It is simple and straight forward. Since there is so much variability in the optimal placement of the film it ay be just fine for your scanner.

I use the Betterscanning mounting station on my 4990 - even dry, I get much improved scans because of the ability to position the film at exactly the right distance from the glass for optimal focus. Doug Fisher has produced a very well thought out solution and is selling it for a great price.

    Ted,

The question. Does the Prazio solution have some working or financial advantage over Kami, or is it just an equivalent? I notice that you nearly always recommend Prazio it but don't recall reading why.

In all the discussions of wet-mounting, I can't recall anyone mentioning its use with a Microtek ScnMaker 1000XL. Is that because the considerable depth of field of the scanner makes it unnecessary, or doesn't anyone here use that particular unit?

    Ted,

What cleanup procedure do you use with the Prazio solution?

Sandy, reasons for Prazio over Kami:

    1) easier to use ... in a spray can.
    2) much less expensive
    3) doesn't dry out quite as fast
    4) easier to clean the film
    5/less volatile

Finally, the next 'grade' up in Prazio oils is still way less expensive and easier to clean than Kami.

Dick, I use the Prazio film cleaning fluid with film cleaning wipes ... use the same for cleaning Kami.
