    filter for Schneinder 110XL

I am about to purchase a Schn. 110XL lens and while playing with it in the store I noticed the filter threads are inset in to the lens. Is anybody using a clear filter to protect the front element? I quickly tried screwing in a tiffen filter (67mm) and it did not go on. But the Calumet filter ring did. If you were to place a filter on the front would that vignette. Any thoughts or better brand names would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

B+W's 67EW filter has a 67mm lens thread, but a much larger glass, with 82mm outside thread. It allows protection without vignetting. Other manufacturers may have a similar product.

An alternative is to place a Lee Wide Angle adapter on the front & have Steve Grimes make a lens cap to fit over the adapter. This seems a bit more manageable than always having an enlarged filter attached.

    filter for Schneinder 110XL

I purchased the 110 XL a few months ago and inside the box was a warning about using anything other than the EW filters. Supposedly standard filters will contact the front element. I found that some of my B+W filters contact and some don't. I don't believe the recommendation to use EW filters has anyting to do with the possiblity of vignetting particularly with 4X5 or smaller formats.

A simple solution would be to use 77mm (possibly 72 mm?) filters or larger with the appropriate step-up ring. The EW filters are nice but rather expensive.

The issue of filters on the Schneider 110 mm Super-Symmar XL has been discussed twice recently on this forum:

I have had great results putting 52mm B&W filters on the rear of this lens. I would caution you to use only first rate optically coated filters of the same quality of the lens if you do this. You will also need to do your critical focusing with the filter in place. This not only saved money, but I carry fewer filters now since I can use the 52's on many of my other lenses.
