Pinkham and Smith lens - what kind?

I've been looking at a Pinkham and Smith lens, and wondering if anyone knows about this lens.

Its a f4.5, massive thing, with a shutter built in. Engravings read "P&S S.A. DOUBLET" and "8x10 - 1091" and "Series III - No. III".

Is this a soft focus lens? Any info appreciated.

Yes, it would be a soft focus lens with a cemented doublet design like an Imagon. It is probably a fairly valuable collector's item.
