I used 600 grit silicon carbide. I got a pound of it from a local tool shop that also caters to jewelry and rock-hounds (lapidary, rock-polishing). A pound of SiC grit cost $8 a few years ago and is enough to last several lifetimes.
I haven't read but a few of the replies here, but for almost twenty years now I've been making my own focus screens using Armour Etch. It chemically etches the glass to a matte finish. Like all chemical processes though, there are skills and tricks to be learned to make the best final product. Armour Etch can be found in many arts & craft supply stores. Always heed the warning labels. Don't get the chemical on anything you don't want etched . . . like the back side of the screen, or your eyeball.
I should state that getting a perfectly even matte finish can be challenging. But if you need a working screen quickly this will work. Etching the screen multple times also helps with evenness.
