New Daguerreotype - With magnified image detail

Some folks here enjoyed the last daguerreotypes I shared so here is a new one I'd like to share. I'm very pleased with the quality of this plate and I'm enjoying making images like these. This plate is a particularly good example of the resolution and resolving power of the process. The second half of this short video shows a comparison of the plate view and the wider scene. It also shows an extreme crop of a very small portion of the plate image which when magnified shows the readable font of an Aspen box truck from a quarter of a mile away (in mirror since daguerreotypes are a mirror image). The font on the truck is approximately 0.3mm tall on the plate. Hope you enjoy and happy holidays to everyone celebrating.

    I agree with Ulophot, neat.

    Resolution seems to be unbelievable.

It's the most "intimate" way of viewing the actual image, more so even than a contract print (which is one generation away). A good daguerreotype is a unique gem. This is a beauty!
    Where are we going?
And why are we in this handbasket?

Excellent, that is impressive work! A mundane question, though: how are you fabricating the metal border for the glass? I’ve seen some photographers use caming as you might for stained glass, but this seems more like crimped thin metal, at first glance,

This is exactly how I feel and why I love the process so much. It's why I love all direct positive processes but the daguerreotype is king among them and really become almost gem-like.

What you're seeing isn't a metal border or frame. That is a type of metalized tape that I use to seal the plates under the cover glass. I'm just fairly carful to create a nice border so that they have a clean look until it comes time to package them into their final frame. Once framed, the silver border will not show and you'll see only the image and maybe selectively some of the faceted plate edges.

Thanks for elaborating, Francesco—you’re providing a great introduction into what that medium is capable of.
